What works

  • Invoicing and expense tracking sit in the same place, which suits a business that bills by project.
  • Client-facing documents — estimates, invoices, proposals — look consistent without design effort.
  • Time tracking attaches to billable work rather than living in a separate app.

What doesn't

  • Plan limits are tied to billable clients, which punishes a business with many small retainers.
  • Accounting depth is thinner than a dedicated bookkeeping tool, so growth means a second subscription.
  • Double-entry accounting is not the model, which matters once an accountant is involved.
The short answer

A reasonable fit if you bill by project and want invoicing plus light accounting in one tool. If you send few invoices or already run separate bookkeeping, the client-based plan limits make it expensive for what it does.

Sample content. This review exists to demonstrate the review template. No price, plan limit, or feature claim below has been verified against the vendor’s current documentation. Prices and plans shown in the panel above are deliberately marked “not verified”. Do not treat this page as research.

Who FreshBooks is for

FreshBooks is built around the shape of a service business: you do work for a client, you track time or a fixed fee, you send an invoice, you chase it, and you record the expense that went with it. If that describes your month, the tool’s centre of gravity will feel natural.

It is a poor fit for three common freelancer shapes: someone who sends four invoices a year, someone whose accountant already runs the books, and someone whose work is productised and billed through a platform.

What you get

The core loop is invoicing, expenses, and time tracking with a client record holding it together. Estimates convert into invoices, which is the feature most solo businesses notice first because it removes a copy-paste step.

Client-facing documents are the strongest part of the product. They look like they came from a company rather than a person with a spreadsheet, and for a freelancer selling against larger competitors that is not a cosmetic detail.

Pricing and plan limits

Pricing on this page has not been verified. Before publication, every figure here must be checked against the vendor’s pricing page and dated. The structural point that survives a price change is this: FreshBooks plans are limited by the number of billable clients, not by the number of invoices or users.

For a business with a handful of long retainers, that limit is irrelevant. For a business with many small one-off clients, it becomes the binding constraint and the effective cost per client rises quickly.

Where it stops being the right choice

  • You need full double-entry accounting. This is not that product, and pretending otherwise leads to a migration later.
  • You invoice rarely. The value is in repeated use; four invoices a year does not justify a subscription.
  • Your accountant has a system. Two sets of books is worse than one.
  • You need deep inventory or multi-entity support. Wrong tool, wrong shape.

How it compares

If the decision is between an all-in-one freelance suite and a dedicated invoicing tool, the FreshBooks vs. Bonsai comparison walks through the trade-off by business type rather than by feature count.

Frequently asked

Is there a free plan?

There has historically been a trial rather than a permanent free tier. Confirm the current terms on the vendor’s site before relying on it — this page does not assert a trial length because that has not been verified.

Can I export my data if I leave?

Export capability is one of the questions we ask of every tool. It must be confirmed in the vendor’s documentation and recorded in the sources list before this page is published.

Is it good for UK or Canadian freelancers?

Currency, tax, and payment-provider support differ by country. Do not assume the US feature set carries over; check the local pricing page and the supported payment methods before subscribing.

Sources and verification

Every factual claim above needs a source before this page goes live. The panel at the top of this review records the pricing verification date; when that date is missing, treat the pricing as unknown.

Sources we used

Everything factual on this page should be checkable against the sources below. Where a source could not be found, the field says “not verified” rather than carrying an estimate.
